In the Milward Brown Sunday Independent poll, 7% of the sample said that they had ever taken cocaine. Around a quarter say that they know someone who takes the drug regularly. Thirty-nine percent said that they know someone whose life has been adversely affected by illegal drug use.

Those who used cocaine were twice as likely to be young and come from Dublin. Women were nearly as likely as men to have taken the drug. Higher social classes are more likely to have taken cocaine and to know someone who has taken it. Three-quarters of the sample believe that those who take illegal drugs bear some responsibility for drug-related organised crime. One quarter of those who take drugs also believe this to be true. Ninety percent believe it is dangerous to take cocaine on an occasional basis. Two-thirds of drug users also hold this view.
