This paper discusses the Misuse of Drugs Act 1984 and the implications for law in Ireland. This paper finds that the main thrust of the act is the substantial increase in penalty, both monetary and custodial for offences against the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. The 1984 Act also increase the power of the Gardai in relation to the search and detention of persons or premises where Gardai believe drug offences have been committed.
