This paper presents a discussion of the potential hazards associated with an increase in cocaine abuse as observed at the National Drug Treatment Centre (NDTC). In the NDTC thirteen patients were treated for cocaine misuse in 1986. By 1989, 29 cociane and one crack misuer were treated. This increase is also reflected in the Garda annual report. The author concludes that the trend is worrying, as it shows similarities to the pattern of heroin misuse in the 1970s, which developed quickly into an epidemic.
