This report analyses 254 opiate-related deaths investigated by the Dublin City and County Coroner between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2000. The mean age of the decedents was 28.6, and the male:female ratio was just over 8:1. A single drug was implicated in a minority(6.7%) of fatalities. Benzodiazepines were implicated in the highest number of fatalities (70.5%); followed by heroin (61.8%), methadone (56.7%) and alcohol (45.3%).
