The Medical Bureau of Road Safety is responsible for chemically testing intoxicants in driving in Ireland. In 2000 10,134 blood, urine and breath samples were analysed for alcohol concentration. This represents an overall increase of 19.6% in comparison with the number of specimens analysed in 1999. 78 samples were analysed for the presence of drugs and this represents an increase of 56% on 1999. 71 of the specimens tested positive for the presence of drugs. 19 were positive for one drug class and 53 were positive for more than one drug class.
