This report details the history of The Ballyfermot Drugs Task Force, and describes the various initiatives in which the task force is involved. Drug awareness was promoted through schools programmes, information programmes for parents, youth and peer leadership and by raising awareness in the community through music and crafts and drama. Efforts were made to reduce the supply of drugs by developing contacts between the community and the Gardai, implementing research into the impact of community policing approaches and reducing the supply of methadone in the area. To facilitate treatment the task force worked in conjunction with various Eastern health Board facilities, encouraged family support, facilitated skills training for community members and performed research into the culture of drug use. Rehabilitation efforts have focused on vocational programmes such as Fusion and Saol Nua designed to give clients greater chances of employment. In order to fill gaps between voluntary and statutory provision, various youth resources were made available, links between communities and prisons were developed and the Matt Talbot Trust was extended to allow families of drug addicts periods of respite. Support for drug users, parents, families and communities included providing local centres and the creation of 20 community related jobs to support the task force.
