In 2017, the percentage of potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to selected alcohol related causes are below average for females (195.9 per 100,000 population, National 298.2) and for males are above average (1210.5 per 100,000 population, National 1006.1).

In 2017, Galway was below average for hospital admission rates for mental and behaviour disorders due to alcohol (42.2 per 100,000 population, National 83.74) and also for alcoholic liver disease (28.4 per 100,000, National 36.5).

In 2017, Galway was below average for psychiatric in-patient rates for alcohol disorders for first admissions (6.0 per 100,000 population, National 9.2) and for all admissions (16.3 per 100,000, National 24.1).
