Lloyd Mudiwa summarises the RCPI Policy Group on Alcohol’s detailed Submission on the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015, which urges the Government to blaze the trail in the global fight against alcoholism.

Ireland has a unique opportunity to lead the way internationally on alcohol harm reduction, similar to its history-setting move in becoming the first country in the world to ban smoking in the workplace, according to the RCPI.

Countries all over the world have since followed Ireland’s example on smoking. “As a small country, we now have a unique opportunity to lead the way internationally on alcohol harm reduction and facilitate the implementation of similar legislation in the UK and further afield,” the RCPI Policy Group on Alcohol has stated in its Submission on the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015.

Based on its review of the Bill, and informed by the most recent published research on the effects of under-age drinking and the impact of a minimum unit price (MUP), the College said there were a number of additional recommendations it would like to see included in the final legislation.....
