Keavney, Ailish (2011) The pharmacist’s role in the Irish sports anti- doping programme. Irish Pharmacy Union Review, (August), pp. 25-28.

It is widely accepted that an effective antidoping programme is an indispensable constituent of modern-day competitive sport serving to protect the image of athletes and their sport. It ensures that athletes and their support personnel participate on a level playing field. Doping is contrary to the spirit of sport and also has implications for society as a whole – the possible turnover from illegal trading with doping agents is huge, and boosts the demand for prohibited substances; increased demand for doping substances in the sporting environment in its turn fosters trafficking in illegal medications putting public health at risk.
