The number of cases of HIV infection in Ireland dropped by just over 16% last year.

However,10 AIDS deaths were reported last year, bringing the total number of AIDS deaths in Ireland to date to 421.

The number of cases among injecting drugs users continues to decline, the figures show.

Ireland's HIV rate is 7.4 per 100,000, compared to an overall rate of 6.7 per 100,000 in Western Europe.
