The IMO has called on the Minister for Transport to commence the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 2010 to reduce drink driving limits from 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml for qualified drivers and 20mg/100ml for learner, novice and professional drivers.


Since random breath testing was introduced in 2006, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of people killed on our roads — from 397 in 2005 to 212 last year, according to public health specialist Dr Declan Bedford, who said society now needed to take the “next step”.

“They say the reduction is going to happen in the autumn, but we should keep the pressure on,” he told union members in Killarney....
