If top management at the FAI and IRFU believe their organisations would not exist without the support of the alcohol industry, then new people should be brought in to run the sporting bodies, says a leading public health expert.

Prof Joe Barry of the RCPI’s Faculty of Public Health Medicine has also criticised the Department of Health for “fudging” a report into sports sponsorship by the alcohol industry, despite a commitment in the programme for government to “phasing it out”.

He expressed his disappointment to Irish Medical Times that a recently completed report from a working group chaired by the Department’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan – and on which he also sat – came to “no conclusions”.

Prof Barry was critical of the group’s inability to establish the full financial extent of the existing sponsorships or the terms and length of current contracts.
